How Can We Learn Poker ?

Posted under Reading Material by admin on November 3, 2011 10:31 AM ||

Do an archive search at deja on JTs and you should find lots of reading material on the subject.

Answer 1:

I notice that JTs is put in category 3 in HPFAP. I understand how well it is supposed to do multi-way, especially in regard to its ability to make the nut straight in many different ways. However when you look at what values are given to other hands such as AJo and KQo i think it has too much value attached to it. I realize that the hands i mention are intended to be played very differently (i.e. number of opponents) but anyone else think that overall too much value is placed on it? I look forward to reading the counter-arguments.

Answer 2:

YES…most serious hold’em players have come to recognize that S&M over-value ‘suited connectors,’ and J-10-suited is a prime example of their misconception.  There have been several lively and extensive discussions of this previously in RGP, so perhaps you might like to search through newsgroup archives.

Answer 3:

S&M rank J-10-suited a whole “category” better than K-10-suited. Below are ‘test-your-intuition’ questions from RGP last April that Sklansky himself found most revealing and convincing.

What The Limits In Poker ?

Posted under Poker Limits by admin on 10:30 AM ||

Does anybody know the answer to this? He was one of the best pro No Limit Holdem players in Vegas during the late 70s early 80s. Seemed to be very successful and seemed to have it together in terms of discipline and life style control (while so many of his contemporaries were using themselves up with drugs or bad pit or sports betting habits). Did he just walk away with the cash or go down in flames like so many others?

Answer 1:

George was and is a great player.  I remember playing with him in the 70′s and the 80′s but in the 90′s I have missed him but I did play with a few times last week at the Mirage.

Answer 2:

I heard George Huber was dead. I think I mean the other George. He always wore those hats? Had a lot? Played Pot Limit with Pat C. and them at Dunes?

Answer 3:

I, too, hadn’t seen George Huber in years, but he did indeed play in the Omaha Hi-Lo second chance tournament at the Orleans the other day.

How To Face Poker Tournament ?

Posted under Poker Tournaments by admin on 10:29 AM ||

I plan to take a trip to Vienna in the near future.  I would be interested in playing in a tournament or two (I prefer no limit HE events) while I am there. Can anyone provide me with information on where to play, types of tournaments available, etc.? I would also be interested in information on ring games that are available.

Answer 1:

The ‘official’ casino operation company (where you will also find BJ, roulette, craps and slots):

Answer 2:

In Vienna there are two main poker clubs – The Concord and Poker World.  They both are open 24 hours, have lots of cash game tables, and run regular tournaments with buy-ins ranging from ATS100($8) to ATS500 ($40).  The $40 tournaments usually have a prize pool guarantee of ATS100, 000 ($8,000) and are run on Tuesdays & Saturdays at 7:00 pm at the Concord and Fridays at 8:00 pm at Poker world. The concord is known for regularly having ATS100-200 Stud and HE tables running, while Poker world has lower limits usually 20-40, 30-60 and 50- 100.  Both offer Pot Limit Omaha, typically with 2 blinds of ATS 50 and a buy-in of ATS 2000.  The Omaha games come and go, depending on the mood of the players at the time.  Best times are tournament nights as well as Monday nights, don’t ask me why. There are also government-run casinos in Vienna, Velden, Baden, Seefeld, Bregenz, Innsbruck, and maybe other places as well, but these have limited hours, limited number of tables, the rakes are high, the toke expectation is ridiculous and the personnel treat you like you are there to serve them and not the other way around.  I personally avoid these like the plague. I think another poster gave the websites of the above casinos.  In addition there is http://eppa.bigfoot.com which is the site of the European Poker Players Association (EPPA) – worth checking out.

Answer 3:

For a list of upcoming major tournaments in Austria and the rest of Europe, go to <http://www.yeayou.com/pokertour> This is a travel website I operate for major poker tournaments in Europe (primarily) with descriptions of the events.
